Pub Watch

The following pubs are closed or under threat of closure The information is provided in good faith for the benefit of walkers and leaders who may be planning to visit the premises in the future. Updates / changes in a pub's status will be welcomed by the editor.

Pubs affected include:

WORCESTERSHIRE
Dodford - The Dodford Inn - Boarded up and looking very sad.
Elmley Castle - The Queens Head - Apparently the brewers are demanding an annual rent of £80k - how can that amount be justified - or realistic!
Severn Stoke - The Rose & Crown - Re-opened on 30 January 2008!
Upton-upon-Severn - The Plough ¦ The Star ¦ The Swan - All still shut due to flooding. The Swan was affected by further flooding in January 2008

Club Weekends

While we are for ever as a rambling club wanting to go on our weekends, we do recognise the wonderful effort several members of our Club go too, to secure dates for the Spring and Autumn and put a great effort into seeing that the weekend holiday break goes according to plan.

We now have to start looking to secure our weekends for the spring and autumn of the year 2010, and are looking for members willing to organise these weekends, so come on lets do it.

Spring 2010

Is it Somerset or is it Dartmoor. Mike Blaxland has said that he would put together a weekend either at Haytor or Selworthy. The date he has in mind at the moment is Friday 20th March until Monday 23th March 2010. So keep posted on this one, these are incredable areas for us to enjoy and we will know more about this weekend in March 2009.

Sidmouth in Devon 9-12 October 2009

"Autumn Club Weekend 9th - 12th October 2009 will see, by popular request from Members, a return visit to Sidmouth South Devon.

We shall be staying at The Royal York & Faulkner Hotel situated in the unrivalled position at the centre of the Esplanade, this magnificent regency building is owned and personally run by the Hook family over three generations and we are assured personal and attentive service.

En-suite accommodation has already been reserved for 81 members which will include 15 single rooms, at no extra cost.

The Jurassic coastline and wooded valleys of South Devon offers excellent walking with contrasting views and some challenging gradients. At least three grades of walks are being arranged each day during our stay.

For those who may prefer a gentle stroll along the tranquil trout rivers of Sid or Otter might well be rewarded with a sighting of Kingfishers followed by a cream tea stop is assured..

So be sure you make a diary note now!!"

Contact John Richards for details. As you will appreciate applications are not due to go out just yet, but these will be forwarded to you in the normal way.

Conwy North Wales  3-5 April 2009
Contact Russell Knapper for details. Applications should be received by Russell / Mazella by the application form forwarded with the news letter, not before Wednesday 25th June 2008. Final payment is to be advised at a later date.

While the area offers some splendid walking, Bryn Corach House is situated in a position that is only 10 minutes walk from Conwy town center.

3-6 October 2008 - Coniston Lake District. Completed
Contact Adrian and Kath Barrett (01384) 296490 for details. Final payment is to be made by 22nd July 2008. At this point in time Adrian Barrett is still awaiting final invoice from HF Holidays to ascertain the final cost.

July 13th - The final cost has now arrived and everyone that is going to Conistion, should have been notified of the final payment for their holiday. This final payment is to be paid by the revised date of 31st July 2008, in order to maintain the discounts of 15% on our holiday that has been prepared by HF .

The holiday is now fully booked, and there is a short waiting list.

For one of the evenings entertainment Adrian is putting a show of photographs relevant to Club Activities. Adrian is requesting that Club members who have pics and would like them to be shown with others via a projector and screen, would you please give him a ring and tell him what you have.

Regarding the walks to date. At the moment our weekend is providing two A walks and two B walks, should anyone that is  going on the weekend and would like to offer a C walk, then give Adrian a ring on the above telephone number. It is also hoped that we are going to be able to offer a couple of 'wobbly' walks for the less inclined.

We must however remind our club members that do wish to go on our weekends that walks do need walk leaders. Should each weekend not provide leaders then we may have to take the HF option and hire walk leaders at an additional cost.

4-6 April 2008 - Malhamdale, Yorkshire.  Completed

Hope Bagot Church  Well it's that time in the year when traditionally we as a Club go to Hope Bagot Church in Shropshire to give our assistance to the church organisers to  tidy / clear up the churchyard. As many of our club members as possible are required, so would all those interested to carry out this wonderful deed on Saturday 5th July 2008 please contact Joan Jones on 01562 882905. As many members are expected to attend, it would be appreciated if garden / small power tools could also be taken to assist with the clearance.

The conclusion to this incredible deed by the Stourbridge HF Rambling Club, which has taken place for at least twenty years was that fifteen volunteers armed with secateurs, rakes, hedge clippers, strimmers etc., decended upon this lovely church and its churchyard to assist church members with the yearly tidy up.

Despite the poor weather forecast a pleasant day ensued and apart from a couple of short, sharp showers, which briefly interupted the work, the churchyard was once more looking cared for. A splendid lunch was provided and tastely consumed in the village hall.

Croquet which normally follows in the afternoon did however not take place this year due to the damp conditions.

Thursday Night Twilight walks 2008 - We started off in June with a hilly walk at Clent led by Annette and closed the season with a walk at the end of July at Orton, Wombourne.

In between there was a really pleasant walk at Norton thanks to Edna and Bruce; on another fine evening we walked at Hinksford with Pam and Eric.

Our friends Christine and Alan led us around countryside at Hagley whilst Janice and Bob did Stourton and had the biggest turnout with 20 people attending - well done.

The penultimate walk was with Brian T and Karen on a really warm July evening. (thank goodness for the Plough at Belbroughton).

Jolle, Grace and Joe chose Enville common on the only wet evening but the 13 adults present put on their wet gear, raised their umbrellas and let the kids get on with it, which they did a good job of. The only thing we didn't do was to follow Joe up every other tree. No pub that night as we were rather damp to put it mildly.

My own walk at Kinver was done in reasonably good time; there was some confusion about the starting point but we now know how to direct walkers to the parking place for next time!!

All the walks were enjoyable and starting them from a parking spot at 7:00pm with no Stourbridge pickup was a welcome change giving us more daylight for the walks.

Thanks to everyone that took part

Sponsored Walk - For those that may be interested there is a sponsored walk for Beast Cancer on 16th November 2008. This is being organised by Yvonne Crawley and Mazella. When further information is known then we will let you know.

21st September 2008 - SHFRC Sponsored Walk in aid of Cancer

Breast cancer is the most common cancer in women in the UK affecting 1 in 9 women at some time in their lives.
There are club members who have experienced the diagnosis of breast cancer, myself being one of them at the age of 29 years. We both believe that along with a healthy balanced diet, regular exercise is benificial to our overall health.

"Rest is not best" so please, wear something pink and walk with us to raise money for Breast Cancer on Sunday 16th November in Pershore, Worcs.

This is a B10 walk in a figure of eight which means that even if you only normally do short walks, you can join us and finish at lunch time in Pershore town, close to the car park start.

It is a lovely, easy, gentle walk , taking in many interesting points which we can tell you about as we walk. Starting down the river, then through historic Tiddesley Woods, then into Pershore going passed the beautiful Abbey and stopping for lunch in the grounds and then in the afternoon onto the pretty village of Wick.

Please come and join us, get a sponsor form and sponsor Mazella or Yvonne and get someone (or two ) to sponsor you!, that way we can raise double the money!.

If you can't join us, please, please sponsor us.

Sponsor forms can be obtained from Mazella on tele No 01299 271258 or Yvonne on tele No 01562 743103

Many thanks

Mazella and Yvonne
