Romsley to Upton Warren, Worcestershire
1 January 2008

The first leg of St Kenelm’s Way was the club’s opening walk of the New Year. The overall route runs from Romsley to Winchcombe, but this 10-mile leg ended at Upton Warren. Only two persons participated – Graham Johnson and yours truly who led the walk. No doubt the early start (necessary to take advantage of the available daylight) and the occasion of New Year’s Day were factors in the low turnout. Two other members phoned but failed to show.

From the outset, visibility was poor. On Walton Hill and along the North Worcestershire Path, views were non-existent. The approach of others on the hill was signalled by muffled voices before their shapes came into view. After descending the track below Calcothill Farm, we had to climb back up the hill to retrieve a certain gentleman’s walking pole. Morning refreshments were taken by the dam at Sling Common. We continued south towards Stoneybridge, where we crossed the A491 and then skirted the huge sand quarry to reach The Swan at Fairfield. By now the visibility had significantly improved and we could see as far as The Malverns.

The route then headed southwest along the Monarch’s Way to enter Pepper Wood where we ate lunch under a conveniently situated canopy in the middle of the wood. During the afternoon session, we passed the boarded-up Dodford Inn and the open-for-business Park Gate Inn. We quit the Monarch’s Way path to make a detour via Warridge Lodge Farm to gain a bridleway to Foxwalks Farm. The last mile of the walk – along the extent of a huge field beside the motorway - was tedious and tiring as our boots became clogged with mud. We retrieved Graham’s car and drove back to Romsley where my vehicle was parked.

The second section of the journey from Upton Warren to Upton Snodsbury will take place on Easter Monday. Members interested in taking part are asked to contact me at least 48 hours in advance of the walk.
