We now
have a Blog page on our website for Club members to add their Club experiences. So have a
go, but you need a password for access. So give Colin Buswell a
ring and see how it goes.
Seventy-one members were booked into Malhamdale Newfield Hall, one of the HF holiday centres, where a wonderful weekend was enjoyed by all.
The long weekend was made up with four walks each day. The categories were: 'A' Walks (led by Adrian Barrett and Mike Blaxland),'B' (Andy Singleton and Graham Johnson), 'C' (John Golledge and Colin Buswell) and the 'D' or Wobbly Walks led by Sylvia Singleton.
Saturday The ‘A’
walk consisted of a ten mile trek over Ingleborough, which with
excellent weather proved a wonderful choice with good views for a day’s
walk.
The ‘B’ walk from Litton was a splendid 6 mile walk taking in
Burnsall and returning to Litton via a river path and Litton falls. The
weather was cold, sunny, cloudy, with hail on and off but an excellent
day’s walk.
The ‘C’ walk was in the beautiful local area to Newfield Hall and
included the hills, lanes and field paths and was contained to a
distance of four miles.
The Wobbly Walk started from Malham and took us to the Cove, then
a car drive onto Burnsall and then meeting up at Litton with the ‘B’
walk.
Sunday The ‘A’
walk was led by Mike Blaxland in the area of Settle. This is an
incredibly beautiful place with limestone rocky hills rising several
hundred feet.
The ‘B’ walk took in Goredale Scar from where we took a path onto
the top of the hilly range over looking the Scar itself. The path
continued in the direction of the tarn before turning and taking a path
through a gorge towards Malham Cove. At this point the weather turned
to snow and care had to be taken on the limestone pavement. Despite a
few bumps and scrapes everyone returned to the Hall in one piece.
The ‘C’ walk took in the Pennine Way and a river path towards
Airton and then onto field paths which in places overlooked Malham
Cove. We visited Calton and after four miles returned to the hall in
lovely weather.
The Wobbly Walk began at Skipton and took in part of the Millennium Walk plus an enjoyable visit to the castle.
The evening entertainment included a Treasure Hunt by Mike Blaxland, a photograph presentation by Adrian Barrett and a Quiz by Colin Buswell.
Our grateful thanks go
out to all the management and staff at Newfield Hall who looked after
our every need and made our stay there most enjoyable.

There has been an
enthusiastic response from members to the proposal to help clean up the
local countryside. Unfortunately, the same cannot be said for all bar
one of the various authorities.
There has been a deafening silence to direct appeals to the
relevant authorities - only Dudley MBC bothered to reply (extremely
enthusiastically, I might add).
The others who shall be named and shamed are: British Waterways;
Bromsgrove Distict Council; South Staffordshire District Council and
Worcestershire CC. The proposed area - between Stourbridge, Hagley and
Prestwood - falls under one or more of the authorities stated - an
added complication!
The Club needs to have official approval and support from the authorities - due to insurance, health & safety, risk assessments, equipment supply plus logistics (disposal of collected matter). Without that endorsement, it is not advisable to proceed, unless on an individual basis. Thanks to each of the fifteen volunteers who 'signed' up!
Stourbridge, situated in
the unimaginatively-named, yet accurately-described, West Midlands, is
approximately 20 kms (12 miles) south-west of Birmingham. It is
sandwiched between the Black Country, Staffordshire and Worcestershire.
We are blessed with some magnificent countryside within easy reach -
some as close as a ten minute walk away.
Stourbridge HF Rambling Club (SHFRC) was formed in 1953 and,
over half-a-century later, offers the best and widest choice of walks
of any club in the region.
Walks take place throughout the year on Saturdays, Sundays,
Tuesdays and Wednesdays (plus Thursday evenings in summer). Walk
distances usually range between 4 and 11 miles.
Visitors are welcome on all walks, but must decide whether or not to join after their third 'free' walk.
Animal pets are not permitted on any club walks.
The annual subscription fee is £5 added to which is a one-off
joining fee of £5. Our membership currently numbers 369 - thankfully
not all walk at the same time!
So if you are a potential new recruit, SHFRC invites you to take up our offer that enables you to enjoy up to three walks - free - before you decide whether or not to join. Click the month of your choice on the right of the Walks Information page and decide which walk you wish to try. We suggest you start off with one of the shorter walks.
We hope that you will find any other information you need to know on the Walk Information page. If you still have an unanswered question, then we invite you to email our Membership Secretary on john.richards@thegavelier.co.uk
Further details regarding club walks are to be found on the Walks Information page.
Wednesday September 17th - Please note
'Packed Lunch' not pub as shown in the programme.
